Uniondale, NY - Cheryl Salisbury's first WUSA goal was the game-winner as the Power defeated the San Jose CyberRays, 2-1, at Mitchel Athletic Complex. With the win, the Power temporary move into a tie for third place with the San Diego Spirit. The Spirit play the Philadelphia Charge later today. San Jose dropped to seventh place.
In the 20th minute, Joey Peters played a great through ball to Anita Rapp, who had beaten San Jose's offside trap. Rapp took a hard shot, but it went directly to LaKeysia Beene, who was able to hold on for the save.
Nine minutes later, San Jose forward Katia took a bending shot, on the run, but Saskia Webber had perfect positioning to make the save. The teams would go into the locker room at half, tied 0-0.
Power defender Jaclyn Raveia got the Power on the board first in the 57th minute. Justi Baumgardt took a corner kick and played it near post, where Raveia got a boot on it to redirect it past a diving Beene. It was Raveia's second goal of the year, both coming off corner kicks.
Three minutes later, Baumgardt took another corner kick, and this time found Salisbury for the Power's second goal. Baumgardt again played the ball to the near post, where Salisbury ran onto it and headed it into the upper right corner.
Mandy Clemens almost got the CyberRays on the board in the 71st minute, when she beat Webber to a loose ball. Clemens shot to an empty net, but a back tracking Raveia blocked it.
Two minutes later, Keri Sanchez had two of her shots on an empty net both blocked by the Power defense. In the 73rd minute, Sanchez was able to get around Webber only to have her shot blocked by Raveia. Sanchez was first to the rebound, but her second shot was blocked by Salisbury. The third rebound came to Clemens, and Webber was able to save her hard shot.
The In the 78th minute, Clemens' shot beat Webber, only to have it hit the right post.
The CyberRays would tally in the 86th minute. Sanchez got behind the Power defense and played a ball into the middle. Second half-sub Tisha Venturini-Hoch slid onto it and redirected into the empty net.
The Power would control the ball well the finial few minutes and held onto the win. New York is now unbeaten in their last four home games, a new team record. With the win, the Power swept the three-game season series with the CyberRays. Coming into the season, the CyberRays dominated the series, winning five of the six regular-season matches.
San Jose next hosts the Philadelphia Charge on July 20, while the Power travel to Carolina to take on the Courage on July 12.
