New York Power News Release
Uniondale, NY - The Carolina Courage (4-6-3, 15 pts) scored twice late in the game to come from two goals down to tie the New York Power (5-7-2, 17 pts), 3-3, at Mitchel Athletic Complex. Carolina forward Bridget Prinz scored in the 95th minute to tie the game at three apiece. New York midfielder, Krista Davey, scored a goal and had two assists on the evening.
Davey got the Power on the board in the sixth minute. Tiffeny Milbrett played a short corner to Margaret Tietjen who's cross found the head of Davey just a few yards from goal.
Venus James would tie the game in the 33rd minute. James ran onto a great through ball by Prinz, beating the Power defense. James dribbled around Power goalkeeper Saskia Webber, and slid the ball into the empty net.
Heather Beem's first WUSA goal, in her first start, put the Power back on top in the 50th minute. Anita Rapp crossed the ball from the left flank to Davey, who was able to flick the ball toward the net. Beem got onto the end of it and headed it home.
Six minutes later, Tiffeny Milbrett gave the Power a two-goal lead with her fourth goal of the season. Shannon Boxx won the ball in the midfield and played it to the right flank to a streaking Davey. Davey cut the ball into the box, where Milbrett was able to beat Carolina goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill. It was Milbrett's first goal at home in 14 games. With the goal, Milbrett became the first player in WUSA history to score 30 career goals.
With time running out, second half sub, Danielle Borgman cut the Power lead in half in the 85th minute with her second goal on the season. Power defender Cheryl Salisbury attempted to clear the ball from the Power's box, but instead it went right to Borgman. She collected the ball and slipped it past Webber.
Looking like the game would end with a Power victory, Carolina would equalize five minutes into stoppage time. Nel Fettig played a harmless ball into the box. The Power again failed a good clearance, and this time Prinz was there to capitalize, running onto a loose ball and drilling it past Webber.
Carolina played this game without their leading scorer, Danielle Fotopoulos, who suffered an ACL injury last Wednesday against the San Jose CyberRays. New York also played without their leading scorer, Christie Welsh, who suffered a calf strain against the San Diego Spirit on June 21.
