(Mississauga, ON - ) The Power made their first home game of 2015 a battle to remember with the Brampton A's. The Peel Rivalry was back on but Brampton won their second straight game in a game where the Power had control for the majority of the game. The A's took a 110-105 win. In just his second game with the Power, Jabs Newby led the team in scoring with 27 points. Travis Releford added a double double of 17 points and 12 rebounds.
In the first quarter, the Power couldn't catch a break and fell to a 10-0 deficit by the seven minute mark. Centre Mike Allison sunk two free throws to break the ice and the Power found their mode of attack. Forward Jaushay Rockett's hard fought bucket in the paint sparked Mississauga's aggressiveness and it completely changed the game. The bench was fired up after new Power guard Jabs Newby made a three-point play after getting fouled to the bucket. Mississauga was back and powered on to make it a 24-27 game at the buzzer.
Allison kept the drive alive as he took a hard foul in midair on the way to a dunk. Guard Omar Strong led the offense by providing a ton of hustle in running the floor and grabbing rebounds. The Power's defence tightened up immensely and held the A's to take a 38-36 lead. The Power looked settled in when Rockett took a key charge to keep the Power's intensity high. In his first home game since being acquired, Newby felt right at home with a three pointer in the corner that gave the Power a 53-51 lead. But the A's weren't out yet and locked down on Mississauga's offense for the rest of the half to make it a 63-53 game.
The same story continued from the second quarter. The Power rallied from being down 10 points to take a 77-74 point lead by the four and half minute mark. Mississauga remained calm under the pressure and played smart basketball. Newby continued to make baskets while drawing fouls and it took the Power's play to a new level. Mississauga ended the quarter with Brampton trailing 81-90.
Everyone on the floor was chipping in with physical and smart plays. Newby was on fire with the way he sliced and diced his way through the key. Releford and centre Paul Cooper took the brunt of the hits but made it hurt on the A's as they hit their free throws. The Power remained in the lead 98-87 with five and a half minutes to go in the game.
Mississauga wasn't out of hot water yet. Brampton hit consecutive three's to take a one point lead in the dying minutes. The game went back and forth but Brampton had too tight of a grip and swept the Power 110-105.
Jabs Newby was named the Peak Performer of the Game with a phenomenal performance in his first home game with the Power. The Power will fly east to take on Moncton and the Island before returning home to the Hershey Centre on January 15th.
