Powell's Return, Wooly's Birthday Highlight Mammoth's Saturday Home Game
January 29, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - Fresh off an overtime win in Calgary four days ago, the Colorado Mammoth (2-5) returns to HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center on Saturday night at 7pm MT to take on the Minnesota Swarm (1-3). The team will celebrate Wooly's Birthday on Saturday, and will also celebrate the return of 2010 NLL MVP Casey Powell.
"Casey brings a lot, as everybody knows," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. "He's a great player on the floor. His leadership and his enthusiasm for the game of lacrosse is contagious."
For personal reasons, he was unable to start this season on the Active Roster. His debut comes Saturday against Minnesota. Acquired in March 2013, Powell brought an added dimension that improved the team's ball-movement late last season.
The Swarm will be forced to contend with Powell, as well as Adam Jones. The third-year forward is enjoying the best season of his career, leading the NLL in goals (23) and points (37). He scored a career-best seven goals - half of the Mammoth's total - in the win over the Roughnecks this past Saturday.
"Personally, I strive to be consistent," said Jones. "I think that's the toughest thing to do in this league; you play [only] one game a weekend. If you (score) a couple [goals] early, you get that confidence and confidence goes a long way as a shooter."
Jones' challenge this weekend is a Swarm team he's very familiar with.
"We have a good rivalry with Minnesota," said the 24-year-old. "In my opinion, we both play similar styles so I think it's going to be an exciting game and we both could really use a win."
Colorado scored a season-high 14 goals in Calgary. Meanwhile, Minnesota is averaging a league-low 7.5 goals per game.
Mammoth forward Drew Westervelt returns to the team after a one-week hiatus due to commitments to the U.S. Men's National Team.
Party packs to Saturday's game are on sale now. Get four tickets, four beers or Pepsis and four hot dogs for just $49 at the Pepsi Center Box Office or Altitude Tickets. Additional fees may apply.
