Stockton Ports News Release
STOCKTON, Calif. - The Ports struggled to bring runners home all series against Visalia, and those troubles continued in Sunday's 2-1 loss at Banner Island Ballpark. Visalia (7-4) swept the Ports (4-6) in Stockton's first series at home this season.
Stockton went 0x9 with runners in scoring position on Sunday, finishing the series with a .143 (6x42) average with runners in scoring position and 34 runners left on base. The Ports totaled just five hits in Sunday's game. Grant Green collected his third double of the season for the lone extra base hit.
Ports starter RHP Justin Murray picked up the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in 4.0 innings. Lance Sewell, Jose Pina, and Daniel Sattler combined for five scoreless innings.
Visalia went up 1-0 in the first inning. Murray struck out the first two batters before giving up a single to third baseman Ryan Wheeler. He then walked first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. With two on and two out, left fielder Marc Kraus singled to center field to drive home Wheeler. Murray got center fielder Alfredo Marte to fly out to end the inning.
Visalia collected their winning run in the third inning. Shortstop Rey Navarro singled to start the frame, and moved to third on a ground rule double by second baseman Brent Greer. Wheeler stepped up to the plate and grounded out, Murray to first baseman Kala Ka'aihue. Navarro scored on the play to give Visalia the 2-0 lead.
While the Ports managed to collect hits from the first through fifth innings, they also managed to leave their runners stranded. The Ports scored their lone run in the sixth frame off Rawhide starter Wade Miley. With one out, third baseman Stephen Parker walked. Right fielder Jeremy Barfield followed him on base with a single. A passed ball by Rawhide catcher Rossmel Perez allowed both runners to advance into scoring position while designated hitter Michael Spina was at-bat. Spina grounded out. Next, Ports catcher Petey Paramore came up to bat. During his at-bat, Miley threw a wild pitch which allowed Parker to cross home safely. Paramore walked to put runners on the corners for second baseman Tyler Ladendorf. Ladendorf flew out to end the inning.
The Ports collected just one hit after the sixth, a single by Parker in the eighth. They were unable to stage a comeback in the last inning, going down in order in the ninth.
The Ports welcome the Inland Empire 66ers to Banner Island Ballpark for a three-game series starting Monday, April 19 at 7:05 p.m. RHP Shawn Haviland (1-0, 0.87) will start for Stockton, while the 66ers will have LHP Aaron Miller (0-0, 2.45) as their starter on Monday.
