Lancaster JetHawks News Release
(LANCASTER, CA) - After opening up a four-run lead over Rancho Cucamonga, the JetHawks were undone by sloppy defense and an ineffective offense, which resulted in a 9-5 loss at Clear Channel Stadium Saturday. Lancaster has now lost three consecutive games and dropped eight of its first nine contests in the 2010 season.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the JetHawks enjoyed one of their most productive innings at the plate to date, scoring five runs on six hits off Quakes starter Manny Flores. Rayner Contreras ripped an RBI double that scored Ebert Rosario, which started a string of RBI base hits as Jordan Comadena, Jay Austin and Freddy Parejo each drove in runs in the frame. As a result, the JetHawks built a 5-1 advantage at the end of the inning.
But the Quakes began to peck away at the deficit, beginning with an unearned run off Lancaster starter Shane Wolf in the top of the third. Darwin Perez reached on a fielding error by JetHawks second baseman Albert Cartwright to start the frame. Three batters later, Perez scored on an RBI double by Roberto Lopez, which made it a 5-2 ballgame.
Rancho Cucamonga added a run in the fifth and another run in the sixth to cut Lancaster's lead to 5-4. The Quakes scored twice in the seventh, aided by a fielding error by Rosario, and claimed a 6-5 edge. Three of the nine runs allowed by the JetHawks were unearned.
Meanwhile, the JetHawks bats went cold after the big second inning. Flores settled down and retired the next 12 Lancaster hitters he faced. Relievers Andrew Taylor and Eddie McKiernan combined to toss three innings of scoreless relief for Rancho Cucamonga, which tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to seal the victory.
Flores (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for Rancho Cucamonga. Wolf (0-2) took the loss for Lancaster. With the win, the Quakes improved to 5-5 on the season while the JetHawks fell to 1-8. The two teams will meet in the series finale at the Hangar on Sunday. Right-hander Kyle Greenwalt (0-0, 4.50 ERA) gets the start for Lancaster. Rancho Cucamonga is expected to counter with right-hander Manaurys Correa (0-0, 1.69 ERA). First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. Tune in for all the live action beginning with the JetHawks Pre-Game Show at 4:45 p.m. on www.jethawks.com/csn and News Talk 1380-AM KOSS.
