Portland Lumberjax News Release
PORTLAND, September 7, 2008 - The future of the Portland LumberJax began to unfold today as the team picked up five new players during the National Lacrosse League Entry Draft at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. With the 12th Overall Selection (First Round), the Jax selected forward Tim Campeau. Then, Portland picked up transition player Matthew Yager with the 34th Selection (Third Round), defenseman Dayne Michaud with the 48th Selection (Fourth Round), goalie Matt Flindell with the 61st Selection (Fifth Round) and finished the draft by selecting forward Sean Robinson with the 74th Selection (Sixth Round).
From Notre Dame de Namur University, Campeau scored 30 goals and added 41 assists in 13 games of action this past season. The Coquitlam, British Columbia native will help complement the Portland offense that features the likes of Ryan Powell, Derek Malawsky and Peter Morgan.
"We came into the draft wanting a player who could step in right away", said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "We achieved that by picking up Campeau. He's extremely athletic and played great at the Combine Game."
Yager played for the Victoria Shamrocks of Canada's Junior A System, where he scored 20 goals and added 30 assists this season. Yager was an intracle part of the Shamrocks run to the Minto Cup Final as he scored four goals and added five assists during the postseason.
"Matthew is an all-around good athlete", said Keenan. "He can play anywhere on the field and will help both the offense and defense."
From Seton Hill University, Michaud also played for the Port Coquitlam Saints of Canada's Junior A System. In 21 games this season for the Saints, Michaud scored seven goals and added 15 assists.
"Dayne is a real tough player who was a real nice pickup in the Fourth Round," said Keenan.
A teammate of Yager's and forward Cory Conway with the Jr. A Shamrocks, Flindell stopped over 88% of the shots he faced and allowed only 4.91 goals-per-game.
"Matt is one of the top goalies in Canada", said Keenan. "I always like having young goalies on the roster that we can develop."
Robinson scored 16 goals and added 33 assists this season for the Coquitlam Adanacs Jr. A Team.
"I was real surprised Sean was still available that late in the draft", said Keenan. "He's a big scorer and another nice pickup for the offense."
