Porter Wins Second Ironman of the Week Award
July 16, 2002 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Chicago Rush News Release
July 16, 2002 â Chicago Rush WR/DB Dameon Porter was named the Arena Football League's Ironman of the Week for the second time this season for his performance in Chicago's 56-50 overtime win over Dallas Saturday, the AFL announced today.
Porter recorded a career-high 7.5 tackles, returned an interception 49 yards for a touchdown and caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Billy Dicken as the Rush clinched a first-round bye in the 2002 AFL playoffs.
"Great players find ways to make big plays in big games," said Rush head coach Mike Hohensee. "Dallas was driving and poised to put game out of reach. To make the interception and then return it for a touchdown at that time of the game meant a lot to the team. It put us back in the game."
Porter, the 2001 Arena Football League Ironman of the Year, leads the AFL with 10 interceptions. Last season, Porter's 12 interceptions tied the AFL record and his 22 interceptions in a two-year span is an AFL record.
"I don't know what to say," said Porter. "Balls just seem to appear. It has been happening for two years now. I don't believe in luck, but I believe in fate, so this must be fate."
Porter, the team's second-leading tackler, has recorded a career-high 36.5 tackles this season, while catching 32 passes for 489 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has returned two interceptions for touchdowns.
The Rush closes out its regular season against the Indiana Firebirds Saturday, July 20, at Allstate Arena. Kickoff for the Central Division battle is set for 7 p.m. Fans wishing to purchase tickets to the game may order by calling Ticketmaster at (312) 559-1212 or by visiting the Ticketmaster Web site at www.ticketmaster.com.
