Porter Honored by Baseball America

WICHITA, KS- Wichita Wingnuts left fielder Greg Porter has been named the 2009 Independent Baseball Player of the Year by Baseball America.
Porter earned the American Association's Most Valuable Player award, leading the league with a .372 batting average, tying for the league lead with 21 home runs, and finishing second with 86 RBIs. Porter also paced the league in hits (140), on-base percentage (.453), slugging percentage (.617), and extra-base hits (48).
The West Point, TX native led the Wingnuts with 56 walks, while striking out just 39 times the entire season. Porter struck out once in a 47-at bat span from June 1st-June 13th. Now 29-years old, Porter set a Wingnuts' club record hitting safely in 19 consecutive games from June 10th-June 30th. Porter's 43 multi-hit games also set a new club mark.
A former two-sport star at Texas A&M University, Porter won the league's Batter of the Week award a stunning four times, and was also named the American Association Batter of the Month for June. On August 8th, Porter collected the 900th base hit of his professional career. Porter hit .401 over his final 78 games. The Wingnuts plan to open the 2010 season in mid-May with the league schedule set to be announced in the coming months.
