SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Blaze WR Tysson Poots has been named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week for his heroic performance in a 58-55 win over the Spokane Shock. The award marks the sixth time a Utah Blaze wide receiver has earned a weekly honor during the 2012 season.
With just three seconds remaining in the game against the Shock, Poots (6-2, 220, Southern Utah) made a highlight-reel worthy circus catch to secure a three-yard touchdown pass from QB Tommy Grady. The astonishing reception lifted Utah to victory and proved to be the difference in the contest. Poots finished the night totaling game-highs with 14 receptions for 190 yards and five touchdowns.
"We are excited to see Tysson earn Player of the Week honors," said President & Head Coach Ron James. "He is a hard working wide receiver and has made great strides as an AFL player throughout the course of the season. The award is a testament to his development."
"It's really a great honor to receive this award," said Poots. "This team and I have been working so hard all year, and to be recognized really shows the work we've put in. I'm really happy to be a part of this team."
Since returning from injury, Poots has ravaged opposing secondary units. In seven games this season, the physical wideout has totaled 69 receptions for 804 yards and 16 touchdowns, ranking second on the team in all categories. He's been a go-to target as of late, posting 44 catches for 451 yards and 12 scores during the past three games.
"I'm just trying to do my part in this offense," Poots said. "We all excel at different things and have different roles. The teammates I have around me make it easier to thrive in this offense."
