Plymouth Whalers Conclude 2013-14 Season with Awards Banquet

PLYMOUTH - The Plymouth Whalers concluded the 2013-14 season with the team's annual awards banquet held Sunday at CJ's Brewing Company at Compuware Arena. The following players received awards:

LEADING SCORER and MOST VALUABLE PLAYER, REGULAR SEASON: Overage forward Zach Lorentz, who was the Whalers leading scorer during the regular season with a career-high 27 goals with 27 assists for 54 points in 68 games.

Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic was named Plymouth's Most Valuable Player during the regular season. Nedeljkovic posted a 2.88 goals against average, .925 save percentage and a 26-27-0-7 won-loss record over 61 games.

REGULAR SEASON LEADING SCORER: Lorentz was the Whalers leading scorer during the regular season with a career-high 27 goals with 27 assists for 54 points in 68 games.

MOST VALUABLE PLAYER in the PLAYOFFS: Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic, who recorded a 4.40 goals against average and .905 save percentage while facing 46.2 shots per game against the Guelph Storm.

BEST DEFENSEMAN: Columbus Blue Jackets-draft Gianluca Curcuruto, who scored seven goals with 21 assists for 28 points in 57 games for the Whalers.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER: Lorentz, with a career-high 27 goals with 27 assists for 54 points in 68 games.

UNSUNG PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Defenseman and captain Nick Malysa, who set the Whalers' all-time career mark for regular season games played with 294.

BLUE COLLAR, HARDEST WORKING PLAYER : First-year right wing Connor Chatham, who scored 13 goals with 18 assists for 31 points in 54 games during the regular season and added three goals in the playoffs.

ROOKIE of the YEAR: Center Francesco Vilardi, who scored 13 goals with 25 assists for 38 points in 68 games.

HUMANITARIAN of the YEAR: Defenseman and captain Nick Malysa.

ACADEMIC PLAYERS OF THE YEAR: Cullen Mercer and Josh Wesley, who attend the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park.

ALICE IAFRATE AWARD (Off-Ice Officials Overage of the Year): Defenseman and captain Nick Malysa.

WHALERS BOOSTER CLUB AWARDS: Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.

BARBARA MOHRLOCK MEMORIAL AWARD as FAN FAVORITE: Goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.

SCHOLASTIC PLAYERS of the YEAR: Cullen Mercer and Josh Wesley, who attend the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park.

GRINDER of the YEAR: Defenseman and captain Nick Malysa.

PLAYERS OF THE MONTH: Left wing Matt Mistele and goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic.
