Playoff Game 1 Is Tonight

March 25, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release

Season Series

Now that the MAINEiacs and Wildcats are in separate divisions, the two teams only got to face each other twice during the 2010-11 regular season. Both teams picked up one win this year, winning by one goal on home ice. Lewiston's victory came on November 26th, when Sam Carrier's goal in the fifth round of a shootout gave his side the 3-2 triumph. On December 2nd, Moncton picked up their win, as Allain Saulnier broke a 3-3 tie with 27 seconds remaining in the second period. Nicholas Champion and Shane Owen were the netminders in both contests.

Historical Winners

In the last five seasons of the QMJHL, the President's Cup has made its way to either Lewiston or Moncton on three separate occasions. The Wildcats took home the prize first in 2006, when they defeated the Quebec Remparts in six games. One year later, it was the MAINEiacs' turn, as they swept the Val-d'Or Foreurs in the final series. Most recently, the championship went back to Moncton last year, as they knocked off the Saint John Sea Dogs in six games.

Looking to Turn it Around at Home

A lot of times in the playoffs, teams will look at home ice as an advantage, as they tend to play better in front of their own fans. Both teams in this series struggled at home down the stretch, and will be looking for better results in the playoffs. The MAINEiacs lost each of their final six games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, while the Wildcats dropped seven of their last eight games at Moncton Coliseum.

Special Teams

Lewiston and Moncton will have their special teams strengths and weaknesses going head-to-head in this series. The MAINEiacs' 13th ranked power play will match up against the Wildcats' 13th ranked penalty kill, while Moncton's second ranked power play will be faced by Lewiston's sixth ranked penalty kill.

League Leaders

Both teams had one player crack the league's top ten in scoring during the regular season. Lewiston's Etienne Brodeur led the league in goals (53), while finishing in a tie for ninth place in points (83). On the other side of the ice, Moncton's Alex Saulnier finished in a tie for fourth place in assists (60), while finishing in sole possession of eighth place in points (85).

Head-to-Head

After 40 all-time meetings between the MAINEiacs and Wildcats during the regular season, tonight marks the first time that the two sides will collide in the playoffs. With a 1-1 split during this year's season series, Moncton maintained their six-game lead overall, winning 23 times to Lewiston's 17. In 20 games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, the two squads have been as close to even as they could be, as both teams have won ten times, with two wins each taking place in a shootout.
