Pirates to Support Breast Cancer Awareness Month

PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League will be partnering with Maine Medical Center and the American Cancer Society to present the third annual Breast Cancer Awareness Night this Saturday (October 23rd) when the Pirates take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

The "Pink at the Rink" Night will feature members of the Pirates sporting one of a kind "Pink" jerseys and socks during the game. Group tickets are available for $15 per ticket, with $5 from each ticket being donated to American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The Pirates have set a goal of raising $5,000 through the sale of these group tickets.

The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a non-competitive, three-mile walk that unites thousands of women, men and children in the community to honor and celebrate breast cancer survivors, educate people about how to reduce their breast cancer risk, and raise funds and awareness to defeat this disease. As the nation's largest voluntary public health organization, the American Cancer Society is the longstanding leader in the fight against breast cancer. The dollars raised through Making Strides help the American Cancer Society continue its work of helping people get well, stay well, find cures and fight back against breast cancer.

"Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is more than just the name of an event - it represents the progress we are making together to defeat this disease," said Donna Muto, Community Executive for the American Cancer Society. "We are excited about this opportunity to partner with the Portland Pirates to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month and raise needed funds to ensure Maine cancer patients and their loved ones do not have to face cancer alone."

Likewise, Maine Medical Center is pleased to partner with the Pirates in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Breast Care Center at Maine Medical Center's Cancer Institute is a state-of-the-art, full-service facility, providing comprehensive breast health care. The Breast Care Center provides screening, early detection, diagnostic imaging services, specialist consultation for benign breast conditions and treatment of breast cancer. Patients are guided and supported through the diagnosis and treatment process by a clinical patient navigator.

In the previous two seasons, the Pirates have raised more than $5,200 for cancer research in Maine.

The Portland Pirates, the AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres, are currently in their 18th season as a member of the American Hockey League while the Cumberland County Civic Center hosts AHL play for its 34th season. Calder Cup Champions in 1993-94 and finalists in 1995-96, the Pirates have been home to a total of 230 players who have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.

Celebrating its 75th anniversary, the AHL continues to serve as the top development league for all 30 National Hockey League teams. More than 85 percent of today's NHL players are American Hockey League graduates, and for the ninth year in a row, more than 6 million fans attended AHL games across North America in 2009-10.
