A Look at Last Weekend:
This past weekend Pirates' goaltender Maxime Ouellet picked up his first two wins of the year with 24 saves in the Pirates 4-1 victory on Friday and 35 saves in the Pirates 5-4 win on Saturday. Both Trent Whitfield and Steve Eminger had multi-point games, each with one goal and one assist on Friday night. Eminger and Whitfield each had an assist on Saturday night to continue their point scoring streaks.
The Pirates had a strong showing on opening night from two of their rookies. Jakub Klepis scored his first professional goal, which ended up being the game winner. Tomas Fleischmann picked up an assist on the Klepis goal, which was his first AHL point.
On the power play, the Pirates have converted on four of their 11 opportunities (36.4%), with the man advantage which ranks 1st in the AHL. The Pirates penalty kill has also been superb. The Pirates kept the Leafs from scoring on all nine of their opportunities on Friday night and killed off nine of the ten power play chances for the Leafs on Saturday. Heading into Wednesday's game against Lowell the Pirates are ranked 4th in the league on the penalty kill at 95.0%
Pirates Spotlight:
Pirates' Captain Graham Mink had a terrific opening weekend with two goals and one assist. Mink picked up his assist on the Brooks Laich power play goal on opening night against the St. John's Maple Leafs. As a result of his play Mink was nominated for the CCM Vector/AHL Player of the Week.
Mink's two goals came in the Pirates 5-4 win on Sunday afternoon. Mink scored the Pirates second goal on the power play as he tipped a Michel Periard shot from the point. He also scored the third goal in the game for Portland. As Mink came out of the penalty box he picked up a long distance pass from Steve Eminger to send Mink in all alone. He used his speed to escape the Maple Leafs back checking and slid the puck through the pads of goaltender Jean-Francois Racine. On Saturday he was awarded the Allied Home Mortgage number one star of the game.
