Portland Pirates News Release
Bridgeport, CT - Mark Wotton scored with 1.7 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Portland Pirates in an American hockey League game played this evening in front of 3,337 at Arena at Harbor Yard.
The Pirates forced the extra five minutes by scoring twice in 68 seconds midway through the third period to erase a 4-2 Sound Tigers lead. Jeff Cowan, with his second of the game, and Travis Turnbull struck in quick succession to send the game into extra time.
Jesse Joensuu and Micheal Haley each scored a goal and an assist to lead the Sound Tigers while Tomas Marcinko and Brett Westgarth also scored for the Sound Tigers, who upped their record to 10-10-0-1 with the win.
Mark Mancari had the other Portland goal while Nathan Gerbe, who returned to the line-up after missing four games due to injury, collected two assists. The Pirates dropped to 6-11-1-0 with the loss.
Joensuu got the home side off to a quick start, scoring only 34 seconds into the game. The Pirates answered with a rare road power-play goal (only their third of the season) as Cowan connected for his sixth of the season to even the count. However, Bridgeport scored twice in two-and-a-half minutes to up their lead to 3-1 before Mancari struck to complete the scoring in the opening period. The Sound Tigers led 3-2 after one and 4-2 heading into the third, thanks to a goal midway through the period by Westgarth.
The Sound Tigers out shot the Pirates 35-31 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. Wotton; 2. Haley and 3. Cowan.
