Morehead City, N.C.- The Morehead City Marlins have announced the signings of East Carolina University freshmen Davis Kirkpatrick and Kirk Morgan.
Kirkpatrick, a right-handed pitcher from Greenville, North Carolina, has started two games on the mound thus far for the Pirates. He picked up the win in his first career start on February 18th versus Campbell. He threw five solid innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs. He struck out five batters while not issuing a walk. In his two starts, he has thrown nine and 1/3 innings, with a 2.89 ERA. He has allowed nine hits, three earned runs, has struck out six and walked two.
Kirkpatrick lettered four times at D.H. Conley High School. As a senior he went 13-1 on the mound with a sparkling 0.55 ERA. He struck out 154 batters in 88 and 1/3 innings. He was named Daily Reflector Pitcher-of-the-Year, North Carolina first team All-State, and second team All-Atlantic Region by Perfect Game. Kirkpatrick's father, Donnie, is the inside receivers coach and recruiting coordinator for the ECU football team.
Morgan has immediately stepped in as the Pirate's starting shortstop. He has started nine games so far this spring and has compiled a .240 batting average, with three RBIs and a .321 on base percentage. He went 2 for 3 with an RBI against James Madison on February 16th.
Morgan's senior season at Mallard Creek in Charlotte was cut short after just six games due to an injury. He had a career high school batting average of .409 and accumulated 28 doubles, 73 RBIs, and 89 runs scored. He earned Freshman All-American honors from maxpreps.com after hitting .418 with 19 doubles in 38 RBIs. Kirkpatrick and Morgan were listed as two of the top 500 prospects in the high school class of 2013 by Perfect Game.
The Marlins open the 2014 season on the road against the Fayetteville Swampdogs on May 27th. The home opener is the following night, May 28th, when they again take on the Swampdogs. The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 18th season in 2014, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,100 alumni drafted and 65 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
