NEWPORT, RI- East Carolina University Right- Handed Pitcher Tyler Smith will be headed to the City by the Sea to play for the Newport Gulls in the summer of 2018.
Tyler Smith currently has a 1.07 ERA through 33.2 innings of work, which is the eighth-lowest ERA in the country. The six-foot sophomore has appeared in eight games in 2018, starting four. He holds a record of 4-0 with one save, striking out 21 over that time.
A graduate of East Surry High School in Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, Smith lettered in three-sports; baseball, basketball, and football. On the diamond, Smith dominated. He posted a program record 0.68 ERA over 122.2 innings and in his senior season, Smith was nearly un-hittable striking out 124 batters in 54 innings. Smith was named the North Carolina 1A All-State Player of the Year, Co-Conference Player of the Year, a participant in the Powerade State Games, and Perfect Game ranked him as the 37th best pitcher in North Carolina for his class.
As a freshman at East Carolina, Smith appeared in 23 games, pitching to a 2-0 record and 3.95 ERA. After completing his freshman campaign Smith joined the Bethesda Big Train of the Cal Ripken League. Smith helped Bethesda capture a regular season and Cal Ripken League title, appearing in eight games and making five starts. His 3-1 record includes a win in the championship series' title game.
