Piranhas to call Virginia Beach Sports Complex home

November 16, 2005 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Virginia Beach Mariners News Release

Virginia Beach Soccer, LLC, owners of the Virginia Mariners and Submariners, are pleased to announce that the Hampton Roads Piranhas will play their 2006 Home Games at the premier facility, the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. All ticket sales and game day operations will be handled by Virginia Beach Soccer, LLC.

In their continued effort to establish the Virginia Beach Sportsplex as home to both professional and amateur soccer in the State of Virginia, the Virginia Beach Mariners have reached an agreement with the Hampton Roads Piranhas of the W-League of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) to play their 2006 home games and playoff schedule at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.

The Hampton Roads Piranhas are 12 year veterans of the W-League, and are owned and operated by Marcie and Doc Laumann, recent inductees of the 2004 USL Hall of Fame. As the 2003 W-League National Champions, 2003 W-League Organization of the Year and 2004 Atlantic Division Champions, the Hampton Roads Piranhas are recognized as one of the most respected franchises in both the W-League and the USL.

"It will be nice to be back at the Sportsplex, but the new spirit of cooperation between our teams is what I am really excited about", said Marcie Laumann of the Hampton Roads Piranhas. "This agreement will allow me to step back from game day operations and give me more time to concentrate on player development and community projects. The Piranhas were ranked as high as #13 in the world at the end of our 2004 season, and I am determined to break into the top 10 in 2006," she added.

"We are very excited about our new association with the Piranhas," stated Mike McCann, Managing Director of the Virginia Beach Mariners. "We extend our sincerest gratitude to Marcie Laumann, owner of the Piranhas, and the City of Virginia Beach for allowing the regions fans to benefit from this fabulous soccer facility, the Virginia Beach Sportsplex," McCann stated.

Although the USL League 2006 schedules are still being finalized, the Sportsplex will host all Mariners, Submariners and Piranhas home games. The game schedules will incorporate a minimum of two Mariners and two Submariner double headers with the Piranhas as well as the balance in scheduled single games. The 2006 season will set a record schedule at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex with over 30 league home games between the three teams. The US Open Cup, the Cup against Richmond and some "friendly games" will help to round out the season with a target set by the organization approaching 45 home games for the year of the World Cup in 2006.

As previously announced, the acquisition of the Premier Development League (PDL) franchise and the formation of the Submariners will give fans an exciting opportunity to experience both men and women's professional and amateur soccer for 2006.
