Pioneers keep number one spot in week 17 poll
July 21, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - With a nine-point edge over division rival Cape Fear, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers remained in the No. 1 spot in the Week 17 Coaches' Poll, the league office announced today. In the No. 1 position for the second straight week, the Pioneers have now been ranked No. 1 six times during the season.
Wilkes-Barre took 262 points including 14 first-place votes. The No. 2 Wildcats earned 253 points and seven first-place votes, setting up a meeting of No. 1 Wilkes-Barre versus No. 2 Cape Fear Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. ET. In the third spot was the Tulsa Talons with 232 points and two first-place votes. The Tennessee Valley Vipers came in at No. 4 with 175 points, meaning the Top 4 is the same as it was last week.
Five teams improved positions from last week as Florida moved from sixth to fifth, Oklahoma City went from eighth to sixth, Quad City jumped from 10th to eighth, Peoria climbed from 11th to 10th and Memphis changed from 12th to 11th.
Along with the matchup of No. 1 against No. 2, there are two other games among Top 12 teams on the Week 17 schedule. The No. 3 Talons play at the No. 6 Yard Dawgz Friday night at 8:30 p.m. in a game that could decide the Southwest Division title. The No. 10 Pirates travel to Birmingham to face the No. 9 Steeldogs on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. in an inter-conference game with major playoff implications.
Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
