Pioneers Get Their Swagger Back
(Albany, NY) Ryan Vena threw for seven touchdowns and the Pioneers defense got their swagger back as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton crushed the Albany Conquest 69-27 in front of 3,881 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Schutt Offensive Player of the Game Ryan Vena finished 21-25 for 295 yards and one two yard rushing TD to go with his seven touchdown passes. Three of those going to Larry Kendrick who would finish with nine catches for 107 yards. JJ Outlaw would match Kendrick with three touchdown grabs to go with his seven catches for 118 yards and LJS Ironman of the game Rich Musinski had 5 grabs for 70 yards and a touchdown.
The Pioneers came out quickly scoring on their first drive with a Ryan Vena touchdown pass to Larry Kendrick. The Pioneers defense then forced the Conquest to turn the ball over on downs leading to a two yard Ryan Vena run. The Albany Conquest offense finally got on the board with an Antwun Williams touchdown catch against the boards from Dan Cole.
The Pioneers continued their offensive show with Ryan Vena throwing a high 34 yard touchdown pass to JJ Outlaw to start the second quarter. Dan Cole answered with a quick two yard touchdown pass to WR/LB Vernard Abrams. Larry Kendrick then completed the first half scoring with a spectacular one handed grab as he crashed into the end zone boards for the Cutters Catch of the Game to send the Pioneers into the lockerroom with a 35-13 lead.
The Pioneers defense took over in the second half allowing the Conquest to only find the endzone once each quarter, by racking up six sacks, three by Justin Parrish and one each for Isaac Hilton, Darius Leak and Troy Blackwell. The Pioneers secondary also picked off Dan Cole twice with ADT Defensive Player of the Game Micheaux Robinson intercepting his ninth ball of the season and Barry Drakeford adding a pick six.
Albany QB Dan Cole finished the game a frustrated 25-45 for 202 yards three touchdowns and two interceptions. Jared Jones would finish as the Conquest leading receiver with 11 catches for 73 yards.
