Pioneers Fall at Home Against Dominant Victor Pitching
ELMIRA, NY- Errors put the Elmira Pioneers down early as they took on the Victor Railriders in the first game of a three game West Division Championship series. Three errors in the second inning allowed Victor to put up three runs and take the early lead. Elmira retaliated in the bottom of the third, putting up a run of their own without a hit. Keegan Maronpot (Wake Forest) would score after reaching on a walk and coming home on a fielding error, making the score 3-1.
Victor would score again in the seventh after Evan Fernandez (Jacksonville) hit a ball near the wall which was misjudged by Will Larue (Xavier), allowing him to reach second. Fernandez would come home on an error from Christian Santisteban (Manhattan) who slipped attempting to get Matt Fallon (Black Hawk) out at first. Fallon moved over on two ground outs, and would come home on a single from Chris Lehane (Jacksonville), giving Victor a four run lead.
One more run would come home in the top of the ninth after Matt Fallon doubled. He would come home on a single from Chris Introcaso (College of Saint Rose). With the bases loaded, it was a remarkable play from reliever Garrett Schilling (Xavier) which got the Pioneers out of the inning. Bare-handing a ground ball, Schilling would first throw home to get the double play.
Victor would take the game with a 6-1 win at Dunn Field, breaking the Pioneers 23 game winning streak. Earning the win for Victor would be Mitch Patishall (Cincinatti), who pitched an incredible eight innings allowing only two hits in that time. For the Pioneers, Kyano Cummings (Siena) took the loss giving up three runs in five innings pitched.
The Pioneers will take on Victor tomorrow on the road, before returning to Dunn Field for a third if necessary. For more information on the games, visit the Pioneers front office at 546 Luce Street or call 607-734-2690. For more information on the Pioneers, visit theelmirapioneers.com.
