Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have announced that former Villanova starting quarterback Chris Boden and former Kutztown University defensive back Terry Owens have been assigned by the af2 to the team's training camp roster.

Boden, who competed against the Pioneers last season with the now-defunct New Haven Ninjas, graduated with 24 Villanova school records and seven Atlantic 10 records, including passing yards (10,146), passing touchdowns (100), and completions (868).

Boden also holds the record for most touchdown passes thrown against the Pioneers, stemming from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 67-59 loss to New Haven in which he threw for seven TD's. Aside from the Ninjas, Boden has also played with the AFL's Indiana Firebirds and New Jersey Gladiators.

"He's very, very good," said Pioneers Head Coach Lary Kuharich of Boden. "He impressed me when I had him with New Jersey, and I know he did some good things in the af2 last year." The Pioneers also confirmed that former Kutztown standout and one-time Dallas Cowboy's prospect Terry Owens will participate at March's camp.

"He was very impressive at the free agent tryout," said Coach Kuharich. "I believe he was the best defensive player there, and he has the potential to be a great two-way player."

Owens, who was invited to Dallas' 1998 training camp, played for the AFL's New Jersey Red Dogs in 1999. He is the younger brother of eight-year NFL veteran Rich Owens, currently with the Seattle Seahawks.

"I think this is an excellent opportunity to play for a great team, and excel in a league that's growing and will be prosperous for many years to come," said Owens.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton can invite up to 35 players to participate in training camp, of which 21 will make the team's final roster. The Pioneers 2003 season kicks off in April.

Anyone interested in obtaining information about season or group tickets may contact the team's ticketing department at (570) 270-5811 or (570) 270-3848. And don't forget the AFL begins season 17 on NBC starting in February.
