Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release

Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have announced the first players for the team's 2003 training camp roster were assigned by the af2 on Monday.

Stefan Schroffner, who served as Notre Dame's starting placekicker during the 1994-95 season, will vie for the position vacated by Jimmy Kibble, who is expected to sign with an AFL franchise in January.

"This is a dream come true for me," said Schroffner on Monday. "I'm impressed with Coach Kuharich, the staff and the players I met (at the tryout). This is a quality organization and a great fit for me."

Schroffner, who last saw action with the Irish in the 1995 Fiesta Bowl, isn't concerned by his time away from football.

"My accuracy has always been good," he said. "I've been working out since the summer, and my leg strength continues to improve."

The Pioneers also acquired former University of Pittsburgh fullback/linebacker Glester Thorpe. Thorpe, who most recently played with the Capitaland Thunder of the Empire Football League, impressed several Pioneers staff members at the team's November free agent tryout.

"He's a big, strong kid with good speed," said Pioneers General Manager Rick Sneed. "We're looking forward to seeing Glester in action once camp starts."

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton can invite up to 35 players to participate in training camp, of which 21 will make the team's final roster. The Pioneers 2003 season kicks off in April.

Anyone interested in obtaining information about season or group tickets may contact the team's ticketing department at (570) 270-5811 or (570) 270-3848. And don't forget the AFL begins season 17 on NBC starting in February.
