Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers News Release
Wilkes-Barre, PA - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers announced today that Head Coach Lary Kuharich has assembled his coaching staff for the 2003 arenafootball2 season.
"I've talked to many applicants during the past month, and I'm confident we've put a solid staff together for 2003," said Kuharich.
Returning from last year's staff are former Wilkes University head coach Joe DeMelfi, who has been named Line Coach/Director of College Scouting, and former Scranton Eagles head coach Mark Arcure, who will serve as an Offensive Assistant.
Dean Cokinos, who most recently served as head coach of the Berlin Eagles and the Munich Cowboys in the German Football League (GFL), will fill the third assistant coaching position. He will serve as the Pioneers Defensive Coordinator/Director of Pro Scouting.
"I'm really excited," said Cokinos. "This is a great opportunity. There's a very strong coaching foundation here and I believe we can do some great things."
Coach Kuharich and his staff will continue to evaluate talent as Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's March training camp approaches. The Pioneers have already been assigned former Notre Dame kicker Stefan Schroffner and University of Pittsburgh standout Glester Thorpe.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton can invite up to 35 players to participate in training camp, of which 21 will make the team's final roster. The Pioneers 2003 season kicks off in April.
Anyone interested in obtaining information about season or group tickets may contact the team's ticketing department at (570) 270-5811 or (570) 270-3848. And don't forget the AFL begins season 17 on NBC starting in February.
