PETERSBURG, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots won their tenth straight contest with a 16-1 drubbing over the Petersburg Generals on Saturday night at the Petersburg Sports Complex. The Pilots 38-16, 19-8) used a 15-hit attack and used a plethora of pitchers, including three position players as pitchers, to keep everyone fresh for the upcoming playoff schedule. The Generals (15-35, 7-17) have dropped ten of their last 11 games.
Peninsula kicked off the scoring with a two-run home run by Darian Carpenter (VCU) in the first inning. Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) reached on a two-out single before Carpenter hit his fifth home run of the season to put the visitors ahead by two early on.
After a lengthy rain delay, the Pilots and Generals traded zeroes until the visitors found the scoreboard again in the fifth inning. Devin Mahoney (St. Louis) led off the inning with a double. Sinnen followed with a single and an error on the play allowed Mahoney to score to put the Pilots ahead 3-0. Kyle McPherson reached on an infield single later in the inning to plate Sinnen and Alex Shauger (Chipola) drove in a run to push the lead to 5-0.
The Pilots broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning. Back-to-back walks to Josh Close (Liberty) and Franco Guardascione (Jacksonville) set up a three-run home run by Mahoney to extend the lead to 8-0. Later in the inning, a pair of walks to the Sinnen twins set up a RBI single by McPherson to score Kurt Sinnen. Nathan Eaton (VMI) reached on a fielder's choice to score a run and push the lead to nine.
The Generals got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Jake Rolly (Belmont Abbey).
Peninsula responded with six runs in the seventh to cap the scoring for the game. Guardascione reached on a leadoff walk before Alex Mauricio (Norfolk State) hit a single to left field. An error loaded the bases before the younger Sinnen, Sam, walked in a run. McPherson followed with a bases loaded walk to score another run. Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial) got in the action with a single to right to score Kurt Sinnen. Three more bases loaded walks allowed runs to score to give the Pilots a 16-1 advantage, which proved to be the final score.
On the mound, the Pilots saw action from six players as they look to keep arms fresh for the upcoming playoff games. Caleb Evans (Liberty) got the start and retired all six batters he faced for two scoreless innings. Chase Randolph (Lincoln Memorial) followed with three shutout innings and four strikeouts to pick up the win and move to 2-1 on the season. Welby Malczewski (Auburn) followed with an inning of work, giving up an unearned run but striking out one. Three position players followed with all three pitching a scoreless inning. Kyle Wrighte (William & Mary) pitched the seventh with a strikeout. Charlie Cody (Virginia) tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning before Hunter Taylor (South Carolina) closed out the ninth.
The Pilots will wrap up the season with a road game at Petersburg on Monday night before hosting the first round of the Petitt Cup Playoffs on Wednesday, Aug. 10 at War Memorial Stadium.
