Philadelphia Wings Lose Regular Season Series
February 15, 2014 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Philadelphia Wings News Release
The Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) lost their third consecutive game. The Wings were defeated 13-7 in Buffalo on Saturday night. Philadelphia drops to 3-6 overall on the season.
The opening quarter of play was about defense. Only two goals were allowed. Both were tallied against Philadelphia for the Bandits. Buffalo held the Wings scoreless through the initial 15 minutes. Forwards Ryan Benesch and Shawn Williams added scores for Buffalo.
Buffalo quickly extended their lead to three with a score in the first minute of the second quarter. Philadelphia finally made it on the board on a shot from Forward Kyle Buchanan with 14 minutes to go in the first half. Forward Roger Vyse added his first goal of the season against his former squad in Buffalo. Philadelphia trailed 5-2 heading into the second half.
The Wings and Bandits quickly swapped goals to begin the third. Forward Tracey Kelusky added another score against his former team this season (five goals against Buffalo in 2014). Forward Kevin Crowley continued his streak of scoring in five consecutive games. Buffalo outscored the Wings in the third frame and carried an 8-4 lead into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter proved to be too much for the Wings. Buffalo went on a 5-0 run and led by as many as eight points. Philadelphia scored late with back-to-back goals by rookie Garret Thul to tally his eighth and ninth scores of the year. Limited time ended any hopes of a comeback for the Wings.
Forwards Ryan Ward and Kyle Buchanan were the bright spots for Philadelphia. Each contributed four points of their own (Ward with four assists, Buchanan two goals and two assists).
Buffalo was led by Forward Mark Steenhuis who recorded a hat trick on the evening (three goals, two assists). Veteran John Tavares added five assists and recorded his milestone 900th career assist.
The Wings make their way back to Philadelphia when they face the Minnesota Swarm at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, February 23 at 4 p.m. Philadelphia will trade in their traditional red and black uniforms for orange and black uniforms for Flyers Charities Night.
