Philadelphia Barrage News Release
Montclair, NJ In front of a crowd of 3,204 Philadelphia opened up their third game against the New Jersey Pride ready to win. After winning the first faceoff of the game, Doug Shanahan scored the first goal only 8 seconds into the quarter, with five more unanswered goals before New Jersey could get on the score board at 3:33. B.J. Prager and Michael Springer both had two goals in the quarter, with one of Springer's goals coming from behind the arc. This two-point goal marked the first two-point goal of the season for the Barrage. By the end of the quarter, Philadelphia had found the back of the net eight times, while New Jersey only scored twice.
Although the second quarter was slower paced, the Barrage was still up 12-5 by the half. The second quarter was full of "first times" as New Jersey's Walid Hajj recorded his first MLL career points, with a goal and an assist, as did Philadelphia's Conor Ford with his first goal. Both players were drafted to the MLL in the 2004 Collegiate Draft. Hajj comes from Georgetown and Ford from Johns Hopkins. The first goal of the quarter was scored by Doug Shanahan, who immediately lasered a shot past Trevor Tierney, adding another goal to the score board for Philadelphia 31 seconds into the quarter. By the middle of the second quarter, New Jersey's Jesse Hubbard already tallied a hattrick for the game, his 34th hattrick of his career, a MLL record. Blake Miller added his second goal of the game with 1:21 left in the half.
The third quarter was extremely low scoring, with only one goal scored by New Jersey's Scott Urick, assisted from Matt Alexander. The Barrage totaled six shots on goal, with thirteen all together, but was unable to put any behind Trevor Tierney. Philadelphia scooped up seven ground balls in the fifteen-minute quarter. Greg Cattrano, the Bud Light MVP Player of the Game, was only able to make one save for the third quarter because the Pride only fired two shots on the cage the whole quarter. Cattrano made 23 saves for the night.
Michael Springer recorded a hattrick for the day when he released the ball off his strings at 13:41. Conor Ford tallied his second goal of the day at 8:47 with an assist from Liam Banks. Banks is tied for second in the league for assists in the 2004 season. Blake Miller struck again with an assist from Doug Shanahan only 13 seconds after Ford scored on Tierney. That marks Blake Millers third hattrick of the season while Shanhan's assist marked his fourth point of the game. Despite New Jersey's fierce attempt for a come back in the fourth quarter, they out scored Philadelphia 6-3, they could not cruise past the Barrage. The Barrage plays again at home, June 19th, 2004 at Villanova Stadium against the Baltimore Bayhawks.
