Uniondale, NY- The Philadelphia Barrage, a Charter Member of Major League Lacrosse (MLL), defeated the Long Island Lizards, 17-13, tonight at Mitchel Field in front of 3,430 fans. Keith Cromwell earned the Bud Light MVP of the night with a total of 7 points (3g, 4a). Blake Miller registered 5 goals for the night.
Philadelphia started out the night slowly, trailing 3-1 after 5 minutes into the first quarter. Cory Harned, a defenseman for the Lizards, opened up the game with a goal, followed by goals from Jared Testa and AJ Haugen. Miller was able to be the first on the score board for Philadelphia with a goal at 11:34. In the last 6 minutes of the quarter, Philadelphia scored 6 straight goals giving the Barrage a 7-3 lead. Cromwell, Kyle Sweeney, Roy Colsey, and Doug Shanahan each netted a goal, while Michael Springer tallied 2 goals.
As the second quarter started, the Barrage did not stop scoring. By 8:32 they had scored ten straight goals, taking the lead 11-4. Miller, Cromwell and Springer both added another goal, as well as goal from Mike Mollot, his first of the night. Long Island finally scored at 7:54, 17:23 since their last goal, off a rebounded shot turned into a goal by Jay Jalbert. BJ Prager picked up his first of the night, with an assist from Ryan Boyle for Philadelphia, while Haugen added two more points for Long Island with a goal and an assist. Boyle registered his first goal of the night, and the last goal of the quarter at 1:09.
Coming out of the half Philadelphia led 14-6, but they did not score their first goal of the quarter until 2:28. Steve Sombrotto scored his first of the night followed by two goals from Jalbert, one a two-point goal. Tim Goettelmann notched his first of the night, the Lizards fourth goal of the quarter. Cromwell scored Philadelphia's lone goal of the quarter, with an assist from Boyle. Philadelphia went through a 13:32 scoring drought during the stanza.
Philadelphia shut out the Lizards 3-1 in the fourth quarter, Long Island not scoring until 7 seconds left if in the quarter. Miller tallied two goals, both assisted from Cromwell. Shanahan scored his second of the night with another assist from Cromwell. Chris Massey scored Long Island's lone goal.
After tonight, Philadelphia advances 6-5, while Long Island falls 6-5. The Barrage will play the Boston Cannons at home on August 14th, 2004 at 7:00.
