WICHITA, Kan. - The Sioux Falls Pheasants split a doubleheader with the Wichita Wingnuts on Thursday, dropping game one, 4-3, and winning game two 5-3. The Pheasants' record moved to 5-2.
Wichita's 4-3 victory in game one came on a walkoff RBI single from Josh Horn in the bottom of the seventh. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Wingnuts outfielder Chris Colton led doubled off Pheasants reliever Matt Zachary. Patrick Brooks singled to advance Colton, and Horn followed with the game-winning hit. Horn finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
The Wingnuts scored twice in the first inning on run-scoring singles from Ryan Patterson and Michael Thompson. The Pheasants answered with three runs in the fifth. Hunter Jobes' double down the right field line cashed in Trevor Lawhorn and Eddy Rodriguez. Jobes finished the series 4-for-10 with three RBI.
Zachary (0-1) took the loss in relief of starter Chris Salberg, who lasted six innings and allowed three runs - two earned - on seven hits. He did not walk or strike out a batter. Doug Hurn (1-1) earned the win in relief of Wichita starter Adam Cowart. Hurn pitched a scoreless seventh and struck out one.
In game two, the Pheasants jumped on the Wingnuts in the first inning. It started with Reggie Abercrombie's second home run of the year, a solo blast to center field. Trever Lawhorn singled home Beau Torbert, and Hunter Jobes followed with an RBI groundout for a 3-0 lead. Sioux Falls added two more runs in the second off a throwing error from Wichita starter Gabe Medina.
Ryan Shaver (2-0) earned his second victory. He tossed five innings, yielded three runs on four hits and walked six. He had no strikeouts. Aaron Cotter closed the game with a scoreless seventh for his first save of the year.
Shaver fought out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fourth inning. He induced Jeff Giacomini into a double play and Patrick Brooks into a ground out to shortstop. A run that scored on the double play was the only damage.
Wichita designated hitter Mario Delgado had two RBI singles in the first and fifth innings and finished 2-for-3.
The Pheasants visit the Sioux City Explorers at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, May 21, in Sioux City. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM KWSN and www.kwsn.com.
