Upcoming
Coming off one of their largest crowds ever at the Glens Falls Civic Center, the Adirondack Phantoms return for home game #2 against the Springfield Falcons this Saturday night. Springfield is the affiliate for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the defending Northeast Division champions are off to a 3-0 start this year.
The Phantoms open the weekend on the road at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Friday night. Both opponents are unbeaten in the early season standings at 3-0-0. Wilkes-Barre has a pair of impressive away victories to their credit with 6-3 and 5-2 decisions at Syracuse and Bridgeport.
Springfield features goaltender Mike McKenna. The veteran goalie married a Glens Falls area woman last summer. Two seasons ago with Binghamton, McKenna was especially strong against the Phantoms.
The Friday game at Wilkes-Barre ends a season-opening stretch for Adirondack of playing four out of their first five on the road. Beginning on Saturday against Springfield, the Phantoms play five of their next six in Glens Falls.
Opening Night Magic
You made it happen, fans! 5,031 fans is the fifth largest crowd in Adirondack Phantoms' history at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The game was also the tenth all-time sellout for an Adirondack Phantoms home game. And this one featured an all-time first. The game was actually soldout of all seats hours BEFORE the doors had even opened! We got the word out that our fans should get their tickets ahead of time. And you responded by pushing us past the sellout mark of 4,794 well before game-time. After that, we jammed in over 200 more standing-room fans. What a great night!
Undoubtedly we caught the attention of the rest of the league who are eyeing our situation with great interest. Everyone wants to see AHL hockey continue in Glens Falls. You fans have yet again shown the world that this market needs and deserves AHL hockey for the long-term.
Time and Tye McGinn!!
Big congratulations go out to Tye McGinn who was called up to Philadelphia last weekend and promptly responded by scoring three goals in his first two games for the Flyers. The big-winger scored his first goal of the season and fourth of his career on Saturday night at Detroit just a few hours after finding out he was on his way to the NHL. Then on Tuesday he was able to top that performance with a two-goal night against Vancouver.
We also congratulate Austrian talent Michael Raffl on his first NHL callup shortly after his first professional goal on Friday night at Hartford. Raffl made his NHL debut on Saturday against Detroit. He didn't score in that game but with his skills and abilities its only a matter of time!
Last Week
Friday, October 11: Hartford Wolf Pack 5 - Adirondack Phantoms 4 (SO)
The first out of 10 games between the affiliates of the Flyers and Rangers certainly had a rivalry-feeling about it. The game at XL Center in Hartford featured six different fights and a total of 100 penalty minutes. On the ice, the Phantoms raced out to a 3-1 lead by the second period but Hartford rallied a couple different times and ultimately tied the game with 4:36 left on a drive from the right circle by Danny Cristo. Michael Raffl scored his first career pro goal. Bruno Gervais and Chris VandeVelde both scored their first goals as Phantoms. For Gervais, it was his first AHL goal since February, 2006. And Rob Bordson also scored.
Former Phantom Danny Syvret almost won against his old teammates midway through the overtime and Chris VandeVelde had a huge chance for the Phantoms with 10 seconds left in the OT. Adirondack earned a standings point in the shootout loss as Hartford snagged the extra point in the final session.
Adirondack outshot Hartford 35-20 on the night but Cameron Talbot made several terrific saves and earned #1 Star of the Game honors despite allowing four goals in regulation.
Saturday, October 12: Hartford Wolf Pack 3 - Adirondack Phantoms 2
It was the fifth largest GFCC crowd in Adirondack Phantoms' history. A standing-room only contingent of 5,031 packed the arena for the official beginning of the 25th season of the AHL in Glens Falls. Boosted by a loud and electric atmosphere, the Phantoms led 2-1 after one period on goals by Ben Holmstrom and Mark Alt. Unfortunately, that would be the last of their scoring. Talbot was on his game again for Hartford. And Brodie Dupont tipped in a long drive to beat Phantoms goalie Cal Heeter with 2:07 remaining and give Hartford the 3-2 win. Adirondack's Opening Night winning streak of three straight seasons was ended.
Monday, October 14: Albany Devils 4 - Adirondack Phantoms 1
Tim Sestito, older brother of former Phantom Tom Sestito, scored a pair of goals including a penalty-shot tally in the first period on a call that was sternly disputed by the Phantoms. Adirondack certainly had their chances in this one but Albany's stingy defense and Scott Wedgewood's strong goaltending teamed up to hold the Phantoms to 0-for-8 on the power play which proved to be the difference.
Rob Bordson deflected an Oliver Lauridsen shot for his second goal of the weekend that made it a 3-1 game at the time. And shortly after that came another power play with a solid chance to close the deficit further. But Albany killed it off and a couple minutes later Sestito would seal the win with his second goal. The game was Round 1 out of 12 in the Northway rivalry between the Phantoms and the Devils.
The Captain is Back
On Friday night, Ben Holmstrom will break the all-time Adirondack Phantoms record for career games. His 186th all-time game with the Phantoms will pass Kevin Marshall's record of 185.

25 Terrific Seasons
Glens Falls is celebrating its 25th season hosting an AHL team and in so doing now joins an elite group of only 12 other cities who can make such a claim. It's a great hockey tradition with an old-school feel that began with the Adirondack Red Wings in 1979 who won four Calder Cups in their 20-year run at the GFCC. The Adirondack Phantoms began play in Glens Falls in 2009-2010 and are beginning their fifth season.
