Adirondack Phantoms News Release
The Adirondack Phantoms have announced that they have signed veteran NHL forward Jon Sim to a professional tryout contract (PTO) as they continue to add some of their popular greats from the past.
The 35-year-old Sim has played in 469 NHL games scoring 75 goals and 64 assists for 139 career points for eight different teams including the New York Islanders, Atlanta Thrashers, Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars.
Sim also played for the Philadelphia Phantoms in their Calder Cup championship season and led the team with 35 goals in the regular season plus 10 more in the playoffs. He was second on the Phantoms in points in that special season with 61 including his 26 assists. Current Adirondack assistant coach Riley Cote was a teammate of Sim on that 2004-05 team.
That team strung together a then-record 17-game win streak early in the season and then blasted their way through the playoffs on their way to the title. Sim's last game for the Phantoms was on June 10, 2005 when he scored two goals in Philadelphia's 5-2 win over the Chicago Wolves to clinch the championship 4 games to 0.
Sim has positive memories of his time with the Phantoms and said that his experience and background with the staff including head coach Terry Murray and assistant coaches Riley Cote and Kjell Samuelsson were a significant factor in his decision to join the organization again.
"You know it's funny, I was out there for practice and I saw the 04-05 (championship banner) and it brings back a lot of memories," Sim said. "I'm grateful to the organization to give me another chance here and I'm hoping I can live up to the expectations.
In the NHL he has scored a career-high 17 goals in two difference seasons. In 2005-06 he had 7 goals with Philadelphia and 10 goals with Florida following a trade. The next season with Atlanta he scored 17 goals again. His most recent full-season in the NHL was 2009-10 when he scored 13 goals with the Islanders.
He helped win a Stanley Cup as a rookie with the Dallas Stars in 1998-99 playing in 7 regular season games and 4 playoff games that year and won another championship last year with Berlin in the DEL in Germany.
The native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia is 5'10" and 190 pounds. Sim spent the last two seasons playing in Europe with teams in the Czech League and the German DEL. This year, he has played in 22 games with the San Antonio Rampage scoring 6 goals and 7 assists before being acquired by the Phantoms.
Sim will wear number 14 with the Phantoms and can make his debut with Adirondack in Friday night's game against Norfolk.
Sim joins some other "blasts from the past" on the Adirondack roster including recent acquisitions Brian Boucher and David Laliberte as well as Scott Munroe and Danny Syvret.
"Back in '04 (2004-05) with the big banner up there, I was on that team," Sim said. "Then the next year I played with the Flyers until I got traded. It's a great organization and it's good to be a part of it again."
