September 14, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release
PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Phantoms today officially announced a pair of additions to the American Hockey League (AHL) organization. Mike Thornton was named the Director of Public Relations and Brian Smith the Assistant Director of Public Relations.
Thornton comes to Philadelphia from a similar post with the Worcester IceCats. For six seasons, he handled the public relations and broadcasting duties for the Blues' AHL affiliate. Prior to the IceCats, the SUNY Fredonia graduate spent two seasons with the Binghamton, NY based BC Icemen of the United Hockey League (UHL) and one with the Dayton Ice Bandits of the then Colonial Hockey League (CoHL). The 36-year old began his career in his home state of Maine as the Director of Broadcasting for the Portland Sea Dogs during their inaugural season in the AA Eastern League (EL). Baseball led to his involvement in the cross-town hockey team, the Portland Pirates, and eventually a move to Dayton.
Smith joins the Phantoms from the Philadelphia 76ers, where he was the New Media Coordinator in the team's communications department during the 2004-05 season. He is a native of Wilmington, DE and graduated from the University of Delaware. Smith spent three years in the UHL, handling PR and radio play-by-play for the Kalamazoo Wings in 2000-01 and 2001-02, and for the Flint Generals in 2002-03. Prior to joining the 76ers, he worked at WTOP AM/FM in Washington, DC.
"We've added two qualified people to the staff," noted Chief Operating Officer Frank Miceli. "Mike and Brian both came with great credentials and we are excited to have them on board."
