Pettit Released by Mariners, Martinez Returns from DL

KODAK, TENN. (JULY 17, 2012) - The Seattle Mariners and Jackson Generals announce the following roster moves. OF Chris Pettit has been released from his minor league contract and INF Francisco Martinez has been activated from his rehab with the AZL Mariners and reinstated from the DL.

PETTIT, 27, has been released from his minor league contract. Pettit played in 63 games for the Generals and batted .279, with 4 home runs, 16 doubles, 4 triples and 26 RBI. Pettit was signed by the Mariners and added to Generals roster on April 21st at HVL. He smacked a game winning homer on May 19th against Mobile. Pettit was originally drafted by the LA Angels in the 19th round of the 2006 draft out of Loyola Marymount University (CA). He made his major league debut in 2009 with the Angels and again appeared in the majors in 2011.

MARTINEZ, 21, has been activated from his rehab assignment with the AZL Mariners and reinstated from the disabled list. Martinez was sidelined on June 7th with a pulled right hamstring. Martinez, rated by Baseball America as the Mariners No. 6 prospect coming into the 2012 season was batting .253 for the Generals, with 1 home run and 15 RBI in 58 games. Martinez still leads the team with 21 stolen bases and was 3rd in the league at the time of his injury. In 8 rehab games with the AZL Mariners, Martinez was batting. .286, with 2 doubles, 2 triples no homers and 7 RBI. Martinez was acquired in a trade with Detroit along with Chance Ruffin, Casper Wells and Charlie Furbush in exchange for Doug Fister and David Pauley on July 30, 2011.
