Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - RHP Nick Petree and a trio of relievers combined to lead the Springfield Cardinals to the 1-0 shutout win against the Tulsa Drillers before 8,207 fans at ONEOK Field on Monday afternoon. The Cardinals have won four of their last five games with two shutouts during that stretch.
Petree (W, 1-3) dealt six scoreless stanzas to collect his first career Double-A win. The former Missouri State standout started his outing with back-to-back strikeouts, and wound up with three strikeouts in the start while scattering six hits. After dodging some early trouble, he retired eight of his last nine batters to close his outing.
While Petree was keeping the Drillers (14-16) off the board, the Cardinals (10-21) struck for the game's lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Facing RHP Chris Anderson (L, 3-4), RF Nick Martini sparked the bats with a one-out double to deep right-center field. 3B Jonathan Rodriguez quickly followed with a sharp single, moving Martini to third with only one down. After a strikeout, LF Anthony Garcia struck with a two-out RBI single to left field, bringing in Martini for the 1-0 lead. It marked the second straight game in which Garcia dealt the go-ahead blow, after driving the decisive two-run double in the Cardinals 3-2 win on Sunday.
After Petree finished the sixth, RHP Chris Thomas took over on the mound and tossed a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh. Thomas retired the first two outs in the eighth, but Tulsa loaded the bases on a single and a pair of walks, leading to RHP Corey Baker entering the game. Baker got the Cardinals out of trouble with a groundball to third base for the force out, keeping Springfield ahead by one run.
RHP Jordan Swagerty (S, 1) then took over for the bottom of the ninth. He worked around a two-out infield single to deal a scoreless frame, slamming the door on the Drillers and completing the Cardinals 1-0 shutout win.
