Perna Powers Rox Past Torrington

August 5, 2012 - Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL)
Old Orchard Beach News Release

Brockton, Mass. - Vito Perna (Southeastern Louisiana) pitched a gem and homered in the fifth inning to guide the Brockton Rox to a 3-1 victory over the Torrington Titans on Sunday night at Campanelli Stadium in Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL).

With the win, Brockton (28-23) moved into a tie with Torrington (26-21) for third place in the FCBL standings.

The Rox wasted no time jumping out to an early, 1-0, lead after Mansfield's Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) launched a solo home run over the right field fence to lead off the first inning.

The Titans answered back in the top of third to tie the game at one after Kyle Decker (Trinity) came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Gus Craig (Columbia).

Brockton regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth when East Bridgewater's Greg Baggett (Bentley) belted a solo home run of his own into the left field bullpen to give the hosts a 2-1 lead.

The Rox tacked on another in the fifth when Perna blasted a solo shot over the left field fence to put Brockton up, 3-1.

After Perna tossed five stellar innings on the bump, Brockton's bullpen shut down the Titans through the final four innings of the game to keep the visitors off the scoreboard and preserve the lead. Perna conceded just one run on five hits and two walks, while striking out six en route to his first win of the season (1-3).

Kyle Capaldo (Fairfield) scattered two walks and a hit in a scoreless sixth inning, while Westwood's John Sheehan (William and Mary) sat down the final nine batters of the game in order to record his third save of the season. Sheehan chalked up five strikeouts along the way and has now retired the last 30 batters he's faced, dating back to July 24th.

Jordan Lozzi (Wesley) suffered the loss (2-2) after allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks in six innings, while striking out six.

Norton's Sean Ryan (Wheaton) led the Rox with a pair of hits at the dish to go along with his 18th stolen base of the season, while Baggett tacked on two hits as well, including his team-high seventh round-tripper of the year.

Kevin Lum (Cameron) paced Torrington offensively with a pair of hits on the night.

The Rox are off until Tuesday when they host the Seacoast Mavericks at 7:05 p.m. Meanwhile, the Titans return home for a doubleheader with the Martha's Vineyard Sharks, beginning at 5:05 p.m.
