HICKORY, N.C. -TheHickory Crawdads, South Atlantic League affiliate of the Texas Rangers,announcedthat the Rangershave named former 'Dads LHP Martin Perez the organization's 2009 Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year.
Perez, 18, made 22 appearances and 14 starts with the Crawdads in 2009, posting a record of 5-5 with a 2.31 ERA, the second-lowest earned run average in the entire league at the time of his August 11promotion to the AA - Frisco RoughRidersof the Texas League. The native of Guanare Estado Portuquesa, Venezuela, surrendered just 24 earned runs (35 overall) on 82 hits through his 93.2 total innings of work, while compiling a team-high 105 strikeouts and only walking 33 batters.
Perez started the Crawdads no-hitter on April 11, 2009,against the Bowling Green Hot Rods, striking out six batters in four innings on the historic evening for Hickory. He also combined with RHP Jake Brigham to set a Crawdads record of 17 strikeouts in one game on May 25, 2009,in Hagerstown, when he struck out nine batters in a four-inning relief outing. He then tied his season-high with nine more strikeouts in a five-inning start in Lakewood on Aug. 2, 2009.
Perez surrendered more than two earned runs only three times all season, anddid not allow more than one earned runafter June 30, 2009,in Delmarva, when he gave up two tallies. Perez also appeared in the 2009 SAL Mid-Season All-Star Game, when he recorded two strikeouts for the Northern Division squadin a three-up, three-down inning of work. Upon his promotion to Frisco, he became the youngest playerto suit up in Class AA in 2009.
