Pensacola Netminder Christie Named SBK Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, NC (December 20, 2011) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced goaltender Steve Christie of the Pensacola Ice Flyers is the SBK Player of the Week for December 12-18.

Christie backstopped Pensacola to a pair of wins last weekend, posting a 1.92 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

On Thursday, the Winnipeg, Manitoba native stopped 21 shots as the Ice Flyers traveled to Louisiana and captured a 5-4 shootout win over the IceGators. After a scoreless overtime period, Christie allowed a goal on Louisiana's first shootout attempt but stoned the next four shooters to seal the win for Pensacola.

Christie came back on Friday with his second shutout of the season, making 27 saves in a 3-0 blanking of Columbus as the Ice Flyers got back to the .500 mark for the season.

Since joining the Ice Flyers on November 23, Christie is 4-1 with a 1.58 goals against average, a .940 save percentage and two shutouts. While at the University of Manitoba, Christie was named the inaugural winner (2009-2010) of the CIS Men's Hockey Goaltender of the Year award as he led the conference in wins (15) and shutouts (2). Christie also earned CIS First Team All-Canadian honors that season and was the 2010 University of Manitoba Athlete of the Year.
