Mississippi Surge News Release
A frantic last minute flurry by the Mississippi Surge fell short of providing the tying goal, as the Surge fell to the Pensacola Ice Flyers Saturday night, 4-3. It was the second one-goal loss in as many nights by the Surge to the Ice Flyers in Pensacola.
After a scoreless first period, Mike Carter got Pensacola on top on a penalty shot. He had gotten pulled down and, after a brief consultation with the linesmen, referee Curt Peterson awarded the penalty shot. Carter made good on it beating Surge goaltender Kiefer Smiley to the stick side. Pensacola padded its lead to 2-0 when Matthew Roberson scored at 6:32 of the second period. Nick Guran got the Surge to within a goal, scoring with four and half minutes left.
Mississippi tied the game at 2-2 when Surge leading scorer Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn scored his first of two goals on the night at 5:10 of the third period. But Pensacola built a two goal lead again on tallies by Adam Kuhn and Andrew Howes. But the Surge wouldn't go quietly into the New Year's Eve. Versteeg-Lytwyn scored again with 2:21 left to play, and there was more drama to come.
Coincidental minor penatlies to the Surge's Adam Stuart and Pensacola's Chris Wilson with 1:38 left to play had the teams playing with four sakters aside. After Surge coach Jeff Bes pulled Smiley in favor of an extra attacker, the Ice Flyers' Ryan Ramage drew a hooking call with 1:03 left. The Surge with the 5-on-3 skating advantage, peppered Pensacola Steve Christie who made four dazzling saves in the final minute to seal the victory.
The Surge are off until Tuesday when they will play on the road against the Mississippi RverKings. Fans can visit with Surge players Monday afternoon starting around 12:30 at Bob's Burger Factory at Courthouse and Pass Roads in Gulfport as players will gather to watch the NHL Winter Classic betweenthe Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers.
