LAST WEEK'S RESULTS
Wednesday, December 26: Penguins 0, BEARS 2...
Garrett Mitchell tallied the only goal the Hershey Bears would need to send the Penguins to a 2-0 defeat at GIANT Center.
Mitchell pounced on a rebound chance at 3:56 of the first and made the score 1-0 in favor of the Bears after a turnover by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in its own end. Jeff Taffe sealed the win for Hershey with an empty-net goal late in the third period.
Bears goaltender Braden Holtby stopped all 33 shots he faced for his fourth shutout of the season.
Thursday, December 27: PENGUINS 1, Bears 4...
Despite holding the Bears to just 19 shots, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton ended up on the wrong end of a 4-1 loss at Mohegan Sun Arena.
For the second straight night, Garrett Mitchell gave Hershey the early lead, this time at 3:32 of the first. The Bears built a three-goal cushion in the second period thanks to Steve Oleksy's first of the season and a power play marker by Mathieu Beaudoin.
Paul Thompson got the Penguins on the board during 5-on-4 play at 4:52 of the third, but Boyd Kane put Hershey back up by three with 1:26 remaining in the contest.
Saturday, December 29: PENGUINS 2, Admirals 3 (0T)...
In the second of the Penguins' three-game home stand, the Norfolk Admirals sent Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to a 3-2 overtime loss.
The Penguins jumped ahead, 1-0, four minutes into the first on Brian Gibbons' fourth goal of the year. The Admirals would rally in the second period to take the lead on goals by Chris Wagner and Peter Holland. With 2:41 left until the second intermission, Jayson Megna beat Ads goaltender Igor Bobkov to knot the game at two.
A scoreless third led to the overtime period, where Patrick Maroon's power play goal at 1:12 gave Norfolk the victory.
Monday, December 31: PENGUINS 1, Crunch 2...
Richard Panik recorded both of Syracuse's goals in a 2-1 win for the Crunch over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on New Year's Eve at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
A scoreless tie held up until the 16:53 mark of the second period when Panik scored on a breakaway to put Syracuse up, 1-0. Panik then doubled the Crunch's lead 33 seconds into the third with a power play goal.
Notching his 11th of the season, Trevor Smith broke up Dustin Tokarski's shutout bid with one second left in regulation. Pens goalie Brad Thiessen stopped 33-of-35 shots.
