Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins battled back from a third period deficit to force overtime against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Friday night, but fell 3-2 in extra time at Webster Bank Arena.
The Penguins (12-4-2-0) threw 35 shots at the Sound Tigers' rookie goaltender and scored a late-game tying goal, but Bridgeport ultimately prevailed and maintained its perfect 5-0 record this season in games that go beyond regulation.
It took exactly one minute for Bridgeport to earn the game's first goal. Steve Bernier converted on a two-on-one rush for his third goal in two games.
Early in the second period, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went to its second power play of the game and sent a flurry of offense at rookie goaltender Eamon McAdam, but never found a tying goal. The Penguins' top man advantage unit spent the entire two minute minor assessed to Connor Jones in the Sound Tigers' zone, ended up with several grade-A scoring chances, two shots on goal and another one that Dominik Simon rang off the post.
The Penguins' efforts on the power play did not yield any results, but shortly thereafter, Simon slid a puck over to a streaking Jarrett Burton who threw it into the back of the Sound Tigers' net for a tying goal. Burton's first goal of the season came at 8:06 of the middle frame.
Two minutes and 51 seconds later, Bridgeport climbed back up, 2-1, with another odd man rush. This time, Ross Johnston finished the job.
As time ticked down in the third period, Josh Archibald snuck a shot through McAdam from a sharp angle and tied the game at two goals apiece with just 3:24 remaining in regulation.
The game went to three-on-three, sudden death overtime during which both teams exchanged glorious chances. At 3:55 of the extra frame, a collision in the crease between the Penguins' Danny Kristo and the Sound Tigers' Connor Jones created enough havoc around Casey DeSmith for a shot from Bernier to clip off of Jones and sneak across the goal line. After a review, the goal stood, and Jones had netted the game-winner for Bridgeport.
DeSmith ended the game having made 23 saves on 26 shots faced, while McAdam recorded 33 stops in the win. It was DeSmith's first loss of the season, dropping his personal record to 5-0-1.
The Penguins' next game is tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 26, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Once again, their opponent is the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
