Pelicans Fall to RiverDogs in First Game, Second Game Postponed
September 9, 2021 - Carolina League (CarL)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Charleston turned 11 hits into 12 runs in a 12-1 crushing of Myrtle Beach. The Pelicans were held to just three hits for the game with Ed Howard (1-2, RBI) driving home the only run on a single in the second inning. The hit also extended his hitting streak to a season-long eight games.
Thursday was supposed to host a doubleheader between the two teams, but game two was postponed due to field conditions. Myrtle Beach and Charleston will now play two games on Friday evening, with game one starting at 4:05 p.m.
It was a rough game for the pitchers as Tyler Schlaffer (2-4) took the loss after allowing six earned runs off six hits in his three innings. Jose Almonte gave up six more earned runs in relief off four hits. The pitching staff combined to sacrifice eight walks with four wild pitches.
The RiverDogs were knocking the ball all over the place with four doubles and a home run. The solo shot was hit by Diego Infante (2-5, HR, 2B, 2 RBI) in the first inning. Johan Lopez (2-2, 2B, 3 RBI) and Michael Berglund (1-2, 3 RBI) led the team with three runs batted in for the game.
Seth Johnson (5-6) lasted five innings in his start with the one run allowed on three hits. He struck out seven Pelicans to just one walk. The bullpen of Audry Lugo and Graeme Stinson silenced Myrtle Beach with no hits allowed through the final two innings.
In just their second batter of the game, the RiverDogs' grabbed the lead off a solo shot by Infante to right field in the bottom of the first. It was his 15th of the year.
The Pelicans responded with Owen Caissie starting the second with a double and coming home a few batters later on Howard's two-out RBI single to right field that evened the score.
The RiverDogs would go on to post 11-unanswered runs and score in every inning but the sixth. They took the lead after Berglund hit a groundout with runners on second and third to score a run. With a runner now on third, Osleivis Basabe hit a ground ball to Howard at second when he threw it wild to home to make it a 3-1 game. Basabe would get to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by catcher Ethan Hearn and scored on a double to right by Infante.
Two more runs came in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Abiezel Ramirez. Jelfry Marte grounded into a force out at second to reach base and scored the sixth run of the game for Charleston on an RBI single by Berglund.
