Columbus Catfish News Release
Columbus, GA - Former Columbus Catfish outfielder Sergio Pedroza has been selected as the designated hitter of the Low Class-A All-Star team selected by Baseball America. The post-season team, made up of players from the South Atlantic League and the Midwest League, was selected by the staff of Baseball America in the October 9-22 issue of the publication.
Pedroza hammered 21 home runs and drove in 75 runs as one of the most dangerous sluggers in the SAL. He batted .281 in 89 games with the Catfish and posted an on-base percentage of .437 and a slugging percentage of .562. Pedroza led the SAL in home runs and RBI when he was promoted to the Vero Beach Dodgers (High-A) on July 16th. The Tampa Bay Devils Rays acquired Pedroza along with infielder Joel Guzman in a July 31st trade deadline deal that sent infielder Jose Lugo to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In the August 14-27 issue of Baseball America Pedroza was named the Best Power Prospect in the SAL. That honor was decided in an annual survey of Best Tools in professional baseball, which included the votes of each field manager in the SAL. The 22-year-old Covina, California native attended Cal State Fullerton before being drafted by the Dodgers in the third round of the 2005 draft.
Other Devil Rays prospects that earned Baseball America post-season All-Star status were designated hitter Kevin Witt (Triple-A), second baseman Elliot Johnson and relief pitcher Juan Salas (Double-A), first baseman Chris Nowak and shortstop Reid Brignac (High-A), starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson (Short-season), and catcher Nevin Ashley (Rookie).
The 2007 season will begin Thursday, April 5th when the Catfish host the Kannapolis Intimidators, Class-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox. For tickets, merchandise or more information call (706) 571-8866 or visit www.ColumbusCatfish.com.
