Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
NEW YORK- Atlanta Silverbacks forward Pedro Mendes added to his already-impressive Fall Season haul of NASL honors after scoring in both of the Club's matches in a busy Week 12. Pedro's offensive contribution- a Play of the Week-nominated chip against Minnesota United and an opener against the Carolina RailHawks- earned the striker a slot in the weekly Best XI, the league announced Tuesday.
Pedro increased his team-leading Fall Season scoring tally to seven goals after hitting the target twice during a two-match Week 12 for the Silverbacks, in which the Club split games against Minnesota United and the Carolina RailHawks. Against Minnesota United, the 25-year-old forward latched onto a Junior Burgos through ball and chipped onrushing United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock from distance, a goal announced Tuesday as one of five Play of the Week candidates across the league. Four days later, Pedro doubled his output for the week when he finished low past RailHawks goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald to ignite a comeback victory for the Silverbacks, who downed Carolina, 2-1, in a must-win matchup in the playoff chase.
With his latest selection, Pedro finds a spot in the Team of the Week for the third time in the Fall Season. The Brazilian striker previously earned back-to-back selections in Week 5 and 6, including a Player of the Week nod for Week 6.
Back into the win column, the Silverbacks will hit the road for the next two matches, facing the San Antonio Scorpions, NASL's defending champions, on Saturday at Toyota Field (8:30 ET | ESPN3). Following their third match of the year against San Antonio, Atlanta will play twice in a row against the New York Cosmos: Sunday, Oct. 4 in New York (5:00 EDT | ONE World Sports) and Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Silverbacks Park (7:30 EDT | Tickets | ONE World Sports). After the weekend results, Atlanta sits four points out of a playoff position but will play five of the final six matches against teams also in close playoff competition.
