Ubiparipovic and Richter Earn NASL Team of the Week Honours
September 22, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Fury FC opened their three-game road trip Saturday night with a pivotal victory in South Florida. Ottawa's 2-0 win over Fort Lauderdale highlighted their strengths on both offence and defence and on Tuesday, the NASL recognized a player from each aspect of the game as midfielder Sinisa Ubiparipovic and defender Ryan Richter were named to the NASL Team of the Week.
As the NASL regular season winds down and with a Fall Season Championship within their grasp, it is this time of year that Fury FC need their veterans to lead the way. On Saturday night, Ubiparipovic did just that in the second half. The veteran midfielder setup the opening goal less than ten minutes into the second half that not only helped give Ottawa the lead, but put Ubiparipovic into the Fury record books as the assist on the goal, his fifth of the season, eclipsed the previous record of four set last season by Tony Donatelli and Vini Dantas. With less than ten minutes remaining in the match Ubiparipovic netted his second goal of the season giving Ottawa a two-goal lead and winning them all three points to keep them atop the NASL Fall Season standings. On Monday, Ubiparipovic was named NASL Player of the Week for his impressive performance.
Ottawa's trademark defence was again on display and executed their game plan to near perfection. Right back Ryan Richter was a terrier on the right flank and as the intensity of the game rose, so did Richter's play. His marking of Walter Ramirez, PC and others was on point helping Fury FC secure their third straight shutout and the club's 12th clean sheet on the season. The quick and nimble right back was also a threat in attack, especially during Ottawa's dominant second half.
The win on Saturday marked the first-ever win for Fury FC over the Strikers. The only other team in the NASL that Ottawa has yet to record a victory against is the New York Cosmos who Ottawa face Tuesday night on Long Island. Fury FC will close out their road trip next Saturday in Carolina against the RailHawks - their third match in eight days.
Fury FC return home October 4th for the All-Canadian derby against FC Edmonton. Tickets to the October 4 match and the final regular season home match on October 18 against San Antonio are available at OttawaFuryFC.com.
