Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
NEW YORK - With more than 40 percent of the national vote, Silverbacks forward Pedro Mendes scored the NASL Play of the Week for Week 12 of the Fall Season. Just a day after being named to his third NASL weekly Best XI, the 25-year-old finisher won the Play of the Week in a landslide, the NASL announced Wednesday evening.
Pedro latched onto a perfectly weighted Junior Burgos ball, took one touch and chipped Minnesota United's Sammy Ndjock. The finish, one of Pedro's team-leading seven this season, floated softly into the back of the net.
With his latest recognitions, Pedro found a spot in the Team of the Week for the third time in the Fall Season and clinched his second Play of the Week. The Brazilian striker previously earned back-to-back Team of the Week selections in Week 5 and 6, including a Player of the Week nod for Week 6. He earned his first Play of the Week in the Fall's fifth week.
The Silverbacks hit the road for the next two matches, facing the San Antonio Scorpions, NASL's defending champions, on Saturday at Toyota Field (8:30 ET | ESPN3). Following their third match of the year against San Antonio, Atlanta will play twice in a row against the New York Cosmos: Sunday, Oct. 4 in New York (5:00 EDT | ONE World Sports) and Wednesday, Oct. 7 at Silverbacks Park (7:30 EDT | Tickets | ONE World Sports). After the weekend results, Atlanta sits four points out of a playoff position but will play five of the final six matches against teams also in close playoff competition.
