Portland Forest Dragons News Release
DURHAM, N.C. â Two former Northern League pitchers who made their Major League debuts this season have been claimed off waivers by different clubs.
Left-hander Jason Pearson, who was recalled by San Diego on May 31, was claimed off waivers Monday by the San Francisco Giants. The Padres tried to send Pearson down but also removed him from their 40-man roster which necessitated him clearing waivers. The Giants kept Pearson on their 40-man roster but optioned him to Triple-A Fresno (Calif.). In two appearances with San Diego, Pearson threw 1 2-3 innings and gave up one hit while striking out three batters. Pearson pitched in the Northern League for Sioux Falls (1999) and Fargo-Moorhead (2000).
The Kansas City Royals tried to removed right-hander Nate Field from their 40-man roster and lost him via waivers to the New York Yankees on Wednesday. The Yankees optioned Field to Triple-A Columbus (Ohio). Field made five appearances for the Royals, posting a 9.00 ERA with no record. He pitched five innings, gave up eight hits, five runs, three walks and struck out three hitters. Field pitched in the Northern League with Sioux City in 2000.
· Former Sioux City and Thunder Bay SS-OF Julius Matos has made the best of his new-found utility role with the San Diego Padres. Matos is 6-for-20 (.300) including a 3-for-3 day Sunday with his first Major League homer and four RBI.
· The Toronto Blue Jays promoted former St. Paul coach Bruce Walton last weekend to the position of bullpen coach in Toronto. Walton replaced Gil Patterson, who was named pitching coach after Mark Connor resigned when manager Buck Martinez was fired. Walton has been serving as the Blue Jays' roving minor league pitching instructor since 1998.
· Sioux City 1B Andy Salmela was drafted and signed with the Houston Astros last week. Salmela is reporting to Single-A Tri-City (Troy, N.Y.) in the short-season New York-Penn League. Salmela, who attended Augustana College, was taken in the 31st round and was the 941st player taken in the draft. Sioux City released him from his contract following his selection in the player draft.
· Former St. Paul right-hander Matt Harrington was drafted for the third consecutive year. Harrington, who turned down a reported $4 million bonus as a first-round pick in 2000 and $1.2 million last year, was taken in the 13th round by Tampa Bay (No. 374 overall). Harrington had an 0-2 record and 9.47 ERA in 19 innings for the Saints last year. He was sold to Long Beach of the Western League prior to this season. Harrington, 20, has an 0-1 record and 4.95 ERA with Long Beach this year.
· The Allentown Ambassadors have set up a memorial fund in the name of pitcher Joe Bauldree, who died in his sleep May 29. Interested donors can send a gift to Allentown Ambassadors, c/o Joe Bauldree Memorial Fund, 1511 W. Hamilton St., Allentown, PA 18102. "This fund will help youngsters out with their dreams of playing baseball," Allentown general manager Jeff Fisher said.
