Detroit Falls to the Firebirds 56-38

INDIANAPOLIS, IN-Raymond Philyaw passed for 257 yards and Eddie Brown scored two touchdowns in his return to the lineup, as the Indiana Firebirds flew past the Detroit Fury 56-38 Friday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. Indiana improved to 4-5 while the Fury dropped to 1-8.

After Ty Grovesteen picked up a Jay Jones fumble and ran it 36 yards to the Indiana 11, Scott Semptimphelter hit a wide-open Chuck Winters on a nine-yard dish at 11:01 to open up the game's scoring. Raymond Philyaw scampered six yards into the endzone to even the score at 5:21. Philyaw then found Eddie Brown for two yards and the score with 1:34 remaining in the quarter.

In the second frame, Winters scored his second of the game at 13:32 when he corralled am 11-yard pass. Detroit's defense stepped up and forced Indiana to accept a 31-yard field goal by Nelson Garner at 7:44. Brown scored his second TD with 12 seconds remaining in the half off a seven-yard toss from Philyaw. At half time, Indiana held a 22-13 lead.

Indiana continued to pressure Detroit in the third quarter, as Van Johnson caught a 45-yard Philyaw pass at 12:20. Semptimphelter followed that up with a 33-yard touchdown pass of his own to Chuck Levy at 9:37. Leroy Thompson rushed into the Indiana record books with his one-yard TD, placing him first all-time in Firebirds history of rushing touchdowns.

In the final stanza, Indiana edged Detroit by one point, outscoring the Fury 20-19 to close out the game.

Semptimphelter finished the night going 28-of-36 for 299 yards and six TDs. His counterpart Philyaw completed 23-of-32 and notched five strikes. Winters led the way for the Fury in receiving with 147 yards and four TDs.
