Peanuts Win Game In Five Innings
June 25, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release
The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, remained undefeated against the Anderson Joes on the season after a rain shortened 2-0 victory on Monday night.
As has become the norm, the South Georgia Peanuts hopped out in front during the first inning. With one out, Mike Caruso walked and then advanced to second on a throwing error and moved to third on a wild pitch. Steve Garrabrants was then able to score Caruso with a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Doc Brooks doubled and scored on a Jon Zeringue single. Those two runs were the only runs the Peanuts needed.
Rain fell throughout the ballgame but the two teams played five full innings without a stoppage of play. In the top of the sixth, the Peanuts scored one more run when Zeringue sacrificed Garrabrants in from third. However, that run and RBI will not count in the official statistics as the game was called in the bottom of the sixth when there were two outs but Dustin Taylor was one strike short of bringing the inning to a close. The game was called after the Joes ballpark staff was unable to get the tarp onto the infield, which resulted in the Anderson Memorial Stadium infield becoming a lake.
Taylor officially pitched five innings allowing no runs while striking out four. Taylor had struck out two more in the sixth but those stats will not count. Taylor does get the first complete game in Peanuts history while winning his fourth game this season.
With the win, South Georgia is now 23-8 on the season and remain in first place in the South Coast League. The Peanuts will play their first day game of the season on Tuesday with an 11:05 AM start against the Joes. The game can be heard in South Georgia on "1450 The Fan" and worldwide at SouthGeorgiaPeanuts.com.
