Peanuts Win First Game Against Second Place Aiken

June 4, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
South Georgia Peanuts News Release

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, played a game for the first time this since Thursday night. It was more of the same for the Peanuts who beat second-place Aiken by a score of 11-1. Austin Weilep struck out ten while Doc Brooks recorded four RBI. The win was the seventh in a row for the Peanuts and it also ended a nine-game winning streak.

The Peanuts looked a bit rusty during the first few innings of play. Weilep allowed one run in the first inning while the Foxhounds threatened once again in the second leaving the bases loaded. The Peanuts bats would eventually get going in the third inning. Jasha Balcom walked with one out and then stole second. With two outs, Brooks singled home Balcom. Brooks then scored the game-winning run when Jon Zeringue had an RBI single.

The Peanuts put the game away in the fifth inning. Balcom led off with a single and advanced to third on a Garrabrants single. They both scored on a Brooks double before Jon Zeringue walked. Nick Prosise and Brandon Woolard each had RBI singles and another run scored on an error. The team put up five runs in the frame. The Peanuts went on to score four more runs in the eighth inning.

Peanuts pitching, which carries the lowest team ERA in the South Coast League, was once again superb. Weilep moved to 3-0 after his seven strong innings. He allowed only one run with ten strikeouts. Jason Blanton pitched the eighth while Ja Jones made his Peanuts debut pitching the ninth.

The two teams will play the second game of the three game series Tuesday night. Dustin Taylor starts for the Peanuts while Jesus Soto gets the start for the Foxhounds. First pitch is set for 7:10. Tickets are still available. The game can be heard on "1450 The Fan" in South Georgia or online at www.southgerogiapeanuts.com.
