Aiken Foxhounds News Release
AIKEN, S.C. - Before Aiken (14-8) had a chance to come to bat Wednesday night at Roberto Hernandez Stadium, they had already spotted visiting South Georgia (15-7) three runs and sat through a rain delay of over an hour. The Foxhounds never recovered as the Peanuts took the series finale 7-1 and reclaimed the top spot in the South Coast League standings.
The Peanuts scored three first inning runs against Aiken starter Jesse Krause (2-1) despite getting just one hit in the frame. The Peanuts benefited from two errors, two walks, and a wild pitch to plate the three unearned runs. With two outs in the inning and the bases loaded, the umpires pulled the teams off the field due to heavy rainfall.
The teams resumed the game over an hour later and reliever Cody Reed minimized the damage, striking out Dumas Garcia to end the threat.
With Garcia (2-1) cruising on the mound, the Peanuts extended their lead with a run on a Reed wild pitch in the third. By the fifth inning, their lead grew to 7-0 thanks to three more unearned runs. Johnny Washington and Jasha Balcom each had RBI doubles in the inning.
Garcia left after six productive innings, giving up just three hits while walking none and striking out seven.
Kelly Hunt finally got the Foxhounds on the board in the seventh, hitting his fifth home run of the season to deep center.
Bradley Key plated two runs with a double in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Foxhounds would get no closer as Ja Jones came on to close the door in the ninth.
Key was the lone Aiken player with a multi-hit night, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Washington went 2-for-2 with two walks, a run scored, and an RBI for the Peanuts.
Aiken returns to action Thursday night when they host Bradenton . First, the Hounds and the Juice have to finish where they left off last Saturday night, with the score tied 1-1 heading to the bottom of the tenth. The two teams will then begin a three-game series that has been moved from Bradenton to Aiken, meaning the Juice will serve as the home team.
